Therefore I say unto you, take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? (Matthew 6:25)

The Scriptures speak of evil thoughts and vain thoughts. We are exhorted to take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ and we are to think on things that are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, of good report, virtue and praise. But here, Jesus, tell us to take NO thought.

Here we are speaking of things that are not worthy of our efforts of consideration…and certainly not our worry. For, worry is the overthrow of anxious thoughts, doubts and uncertainty. Worry is built upon the foundation of unbelief and ignorance of the Father in heaven who “maketh His sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and the unjust” (Mt 5:45).

It is wrong and futile to worry; particularly to worry about food, drink and clothing. Remarkably much of the world’s economy thrives on the worry of man concerning these very things (not the provision of them, but the glory of them). Yet, even the best of clothing and the rarest of foods cannot compare with what God provides for birds and creatures and the raiment of the lilies.

The reason is this: your thoughts are precious and you cannot afford to give them to vain things. Your time is short and it cannot be spent in seeking after temporal things. These things are necessary but are NOT worthy of undue thoughts and efforts. Why? “For your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things” (v 32).

O man of God, spend your thoughts and your efforts in seeking that which is eternal, unshakeable, imperishable – of true substance. “Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you” (v 33).
